Economy ecology
Good afternoon dear teachers, and colleagues. I would like to introduce
myself to those of you who don’t know me yet. I am ………………, a tenth – year
student.
Today I’ll present the most grevious problem that our planet is facing
today, that is the lack of natural resources and our unthoughtful use of
them. Besides, I’m going to tell you briefly how the government of the
United States solves this problem.
Do you know that every year the United States produces so much solid waste
that we could make a line of garbage trucks reaching halfway to the moon?
The amount of rubbish in the world consisted of 40 milliard tones in 1970,
but in 2005 this number is about to reach even 1000 milliard tones. Can you
believe that every year Americans throw away so much food that they could
feed the entire population of Canada for one day? Unfortunately that is
true. The next problem is that space in landfills is running out and
disposal of waste has become troublesome. If we go on living like this, the
world’s oil reserves will last only 35 years.
The practice of recycling, reusing, and reducing waste are becoming more
commonplace. In the USA disposal of waste has been developed into big
business. Mostly every country tries to get rid of waste by exporting all
kinds of rubbish to under-developed countries; used computers, donation
clothes to charities could be mentioned as examples. Isn’t it wise and
